This fantastic drive starts in the famous wine region of the Barossa Valley and takes you right through the barren Australian outback to the famous mining town of Broken Hill. Along the way you will pass through historic towns built in the 1800’s and get a taste of the ‘real Australia’.
Starting from the cemetery on the corner of the Barossa Valley Highway and Bethany Road, head up the Barossa Valley Highway, turning left on Bilyara Road and then right on Langmeil Road. Take the first left on Smyth Rd and continue all the way to Stonewell for a well earned glass of wine.
Spend some time in Stonewell and experience a few of the 60 cellar doors on a food and wine trail or learn cellar secrets in a wine masterclass at Peter Lehmann, Charles Melton or Grant Burge Cellars. Slightly further on is Greenock where you can explore the mill, wheat store and local tavern where you can enjoy some more Barossa wines.
Drive through Saddleworth and continue on until you reach Burra which is one of Australia’s most beautifully preserved townships. Situated just outside of the Clare Valley to the east, it has an interesting mining history and claims to be the merino capital of the world.
Continue along the Barrier Highway and take a left to marvel at the dusty and arid railway town of Peterborough which has a fantastic railway museum and houses one of the few remaining roundhouses in Australia.
Back on the road you’ll enjoy a scenic drive passing through Manna Hill where you will discover just how desolate the Australian landscape can be with its deep red hues and magic light.
Finally you’ll arrive at Broken Hill, the largest regional centre in the western half of NSW. Take in Visit the Pro Hart Gallery which houses the largest collection of Pro Hart in the southern hemisphere with original Pro Hart works for sale.
